A Change in the Weather

Every year, no matter what the calendar says, fall always manages to sneak up on us. Out of nowhere, mums start to appear at the grocery store. Twilight comes a little earlier, the mornings are a little darker. We start to feel the perennial angst of the beginning of the end of the year.

On the one hand, we embrace the coming season if only because it brings relief in cooler weather. We’re thrilled by the return of football, the impending start of hockey season (and the hope of a good team that always, always springs eternal), and the approach of Halloween. Maybe it’s the call back to the start of school, but fall always seems like a fresh new chapter.

But we also feel regret at summer’s end and the gradual disappearance of pleasant evenings on the patio, mornings without jackets and sweet fresh cherries and peaches. It’s like a friend who’s leaving after a long stay; we’re happy to get the house back to normal, we’re sad to lose the company.
